Originating from unknown regions, Alicante Bouschet is valued for its ability to strengthen pale wines and build color in blends. With influences from France, Spain, Portugal, North Africa, California, and other warm climates, it has become especially respected in Portugal's Alentejo region, where it produces powerful varietal wines as well as elegant blends. Expect robust flavors of blackberry, black plum, blueberry, pepper, cocoa, earth, and sometimes a rustic herbal edge, paired with grilled meats, stews, sausages, barbecue, roasted vegetables, and hard cheeses.
